A Proud
Heritage |
|
The three police officers pictured here represent about a hundred years of
NYPD history. The bearded bruiser on the left is an unidentified officer
from the 1880s. The lieutenant in the middle is John Kelly, an immigrant
from Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, who worked in the 108th Precinct at the turn of
the last century, was promoted to sergeant by Police Commissioner Theodore
Roosevelt and went on the command both the 109th and 85 Precincts. The
officer on the right is Patrick Hyland, an immigrant from Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo,
who came on the job in 1956 and whose Combat Cross-decorated career took him
through the 25th, 112th, 17th and 13th Precincts. Lt. Kelly is the
paternal great-grandfather of current PBA President Patrick J. Lynch, and Sgt.
Hyland is his maternal uncle.
